DARK MATTER: An expanding cosmos of art by Christopher Bauder

DARK MATTER was created by internationally renowned light and media artist Christopher Bauder. The expansive museum area is divided into a number of exhibition spaces, showcasing his permanent and temporary artworks.

KOLLEKTION

The KOLLEKTION is at the heart of DARK MATTER.

With this unique compilation, light and media artist Christopher Bauder gives a permanent home to a selection of his works from more than 20 years of unbridled creativity. Many of the works on display have been exhibited around the world before being brought together in the permanent exhibition of DARK MATTER Berlin.

In the velvety dark rooms of a former factory, visitors are immersed in a world of light, movement and sound.

The spectrum of artworks, some of them interactive, ranges from intimate, small-scale light compositions to walkable, interactive objects and expansive audiovisual light shows with a unique 3D sound system.

Each room has its own distinct atmosphere, yet is part of a holistic experience that captivates visitors of all ages.

The journey through the KOLLEKTION is an experience in seven chapters - sometimes meditative, sometimes hypnotic, but always intense. Each work of art unfolds its own dramaturgy over an extended period of time.

Visitors are invited to linger in each room for a few minutes to absorb the various facets of the works. If you want to see all aspects of the installations, you should plan to spend at least 1.5 hours in the exhibition.

Liquid Sky | DARK MATTER Berlin

LIQUID SKY

LIQUID SKY consists of over 800 individual light points which together form a coherent surface. The additional mirroring of the entire room creates an endless light horizon that sparkles like a starry sky.

INVERSE

INVERSE combines 169 moving black spherical objects into a seemingly living entity. Monochromatic, sometimes threatening in its appearance, the ensemble presents  in silhouette against the bright background.

CIRCULAR

CIRCULAR is a hypnotic ballet of three rings of light that perform a weightless dance in the void of darkness. In harmony with the electronic score, they find themselves in a continuous interplay of unity and independence.

This installation uses modern technology to simulate an archaic institution - The Bonfire. Digital technology creates the illusion of sitting together with friends around a campfire under a starry sky.

Polygon Playground | DARK MATTER Berlin

POLYGON PLAYGROUND translates a computer-generated object into real space. A seamless 360-degree projection covers the surface like a digital skin that reacts to the visitor's movements via sensors.

GRID combines kinetic motion, light and electronic music  to create a giant audiovisual sculpture that hovers above the audience. The audiovisual installation symbolizes the merging of the digital and physical world. GRID is enduring and fleeting at the same time.

A household ladder extended with sensors turns into a real musical instrument. The ordinary ladder becomes a TONE LADDER. If you step on a rung or touch it with your hand, a sound or rhythm is created that varies from step to step.

Reflections on Light & Sound

28.03. - 14.09.2025

SKALAR is a large-scale audiovisual art installation by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray in the form of an intense emotional journey. The dynamic artwork plays with light, sound, movement, and human perception in unconventional ways.

Light Art in the Open Air

The FREIRAUM outdoor space is DARK MATTER's open stage - a place that changes with the seasons and constantly creates new light art experiences.

Temporary, seasonal installations use the sky as a canvas, immersing the space in a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.

With popular formats such as SOMMERLIGHTS and WINTERLIGHTS, FREIRAUM is transformed into a spectacular outdoor experience: sometimes poetic, sometimes powerful - always new and surprising. The large-scale light installations blend architecture and nature to create an ambience that transports visitors to another world.

Whether on balmy summer nights or frosty winter evenings, FREIRAUM turns darkness into an experience and invites you to experience light art outdoors.
